History of "The Tree"
(español)
The“Christmas Story Tree” started out as a church program done in the sanctuary of Del Cerro Baptist in 1976.In 1986, the “Tree” moved to Balboa Park’s Spreckels Organ Pavilion and except for one year, has been performed at every “Christmas on the Prado”, since 1986. The 80 voice choir, the 20-piece orchestra, and drama team presents the story of Christmas in music and living scenes.
In 1994, the main frame of the “Tree” was found missing, but the show still went on. We were not able to replace the structure that year so a substitute stage and forest were used. Since then, the “Tree” has been rebuilt, bigger and better than ever.
Del Cerro still holds to the original idea that it needs to be out in the community, and the “Tree” gives us that opportunity because it is offered for free to the public, and tells the true Christmas Story of Jesus’ birth.
Each year, it takes an entire week to prepare for the performance. The congregation from Del Cerro Baptist arrives down at the Organ Pavilion on Monday morning, before the 1st full weekend in Dec., and begins what is referred to as “Tree Week.” Most of the set-up and decorating take place on Monday. Tech crews and drama teams will be getting ready, while decorators will be putting on the final touches. Rehearsals begin on Tuesday night. Watching the “Tree” go up and see it come to life is almost as exciting as seeing the performance.
The first two performances for this year will be Friday and Saturday nights, December 5th and 6th at 7pm. These performances will be part of “ Balboa Park December Nights Celebration” and take place during the night’s activities. An encore performance is planned for Sunday, the 7th, at 5pm after which the “Tree” will come down and stored until next December.
